‘BREAST FRIENDS’ FUN WALK HAILED A SUCCESS
May 13th 2011 - DIGICEL SUPPORTS BREAST FRIENDSSaturday May 7th 2011 – St. John’s, Antigua
and Barbuda: If you
were one of the many people who participated in ‘Breast Friends’ “Pink Ribbon
Fun Walk” on Saturday May 7th, you’ve played your part in the fight
against breast cancer.
Two hundred
and seventy people registered and participated in the walk which moved off from
the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium at 5:30am in support of a worthy cause;
education in the fight against breast cancer.
The walk
moved off from Sir Vivian Richards stadium and made its way on old Parham road
through Paynters and Pigotts then turning left onto the Sir George Walter
Highway, left onto Sir Sidney Walling Highway and culminating where it all
started, the stadium.
While
it seemed like a challenging route on what was an overcast morning, the
participants, among which were members of Breast Friends, representatives of
Digicel and members of the public, stayed the course in conveying the
resilience of breast cancer survivors.
At
the prize giving ceremony, Eunetta Bird, President of the ‘Breast Friends’,
spoke briefly thanking everyone for their support and promised the next ‘walk’
will be bigger and better.
Digicel
General Manager, John Delves, whose mother is an eight-year cancer survivor,
deemed the event a success and reaffirmed his and Digicel’s support for any
future Breast Friends activity while speaking at the ceremony.
“When
my mother was diagnosed with the disease eight years ago, it was because of
early detection and the will to fight why she was able to attend my wedding a
few weeks later, and she is still alive today. I encourage those of you who are
going through the same struggle not to give in - get tested - and with help
from support groups such as ‘Breast Friends’ it will make this fight so much
easier”, commented John Delves.
A
few participants were rewarded with prizes courtesy of Digicel and other
sponsors during the prize giving ceremony. Three winners each received a
Samsung C3510 phone from Digicel for winning their respective categories –
prizes including first to third place male and female, youngest winners under
age 12, and the first group to register among others – received prizes.
The
organizers of the non-profit organization are now busy at work on their next
project and which will also rely on the public’s support.
